Breaking News: UW Confirm Return of Key Star After Injury Scare

Washington’s linebacker situation has its challenges but could be worse. With 10:08 left in the fourth quarter of the Apple Cup, fifth-year senior and captain Carson Bruener tackled WSU quarterback John Mateer after he broke containment for a 5-yard gain. However, Bruener soon jogged off, seemingly favoring his left arm. While team trainers assessed him on the sidelines, UW senior cornerback Thaddeus Dixon made an interception that kept the Huskies’ hopes alive. Bruener then left for the tunnel as UW faced a fourth-and-goal situation.

Despite the concern, coach Jedd Fisch announced that Bruener is expected to play this weekend, reiterating his optimism on Thursday. “I’d say he’s probable,” Fisch stated, though he couldn’t guarantee it was 100%.

Bruener’s potential return is crucial for Washington’s linebackers, who have faced injuries in recent weeks. Sixth-year senior Drew Fowler has been out since Week 1, and just before Bruener’s exit, junior Anthony Ward suffered a blow during a punt return, leaving his status uncertain as he undergoes medical evaluations.

Washington began the season with eight scholarship linebackers, with Bruener and sixth-year senior Alphonzo Tuputala as the primary starters, supported by Fowler and San Jose State transfer Bryun Parham. Ward and freshman Khmori House made up the third duo, while redshirt freshmen Deven Bryant and Michigan transfer Hayden Moore provided additional depth.

In response to Mateer’s dual-threat capabilities, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick employed a modified lineup against Washington State, featuring three linebackers, three defensive linemen, and five defensive backs, including three safeties. House and Tuputala often contained Mateer, while Bruener focused on spying him.

House, a former three-star recruit, excelled with five tackles and a pass breakup, earning praise for his performance from teammates. He has quickly climbed the depth chart since spring practices and remained committed to Washington despite coaching changes.

Fisch has high hopes for House, calling him one of the program’s future stars alongside other emerging players. He commended House’s athleticism and competitive drive.

Parham is also expected to see more playing time with Fowler and Ward out. He has made notable contributions this season, including a forced fumble against Eastern Michigan.

Additionally, Washington has been experimenting with a three-safety package in practice, utilizing players like Fabiculanan and Cameron Broussard closer to the line. Fabiculanan, who has experience playing in the box, has adapted to this approach seamlessly.

Bruener’s brief injury highlighted the importance of depth at linebacker. Belichick expressed confidence in his roster’s capabilities, emphasizing the need for adaptability when injuries occur. “We’ve got a bunch of good players who’ve been playing a lot,” he noted.
