The New York Rangers are among the top contenders for the Stanley Cup this season, and a potential trade could strengthen their defensive lineup.
According to PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, one user suggested a trade where the Rangers would acquire Alex Vlasic from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Ryan Lindgren, Brennan Othmann, Kalle Vaisanen, a 2025 sixth-round pick, and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
This blockbuster deal would bring the Rangers a star defenseman in Vlasic, who is entering the first year of his six-year, $27.6 million contract. Vlasic, 23, scored 16 points (2 goals, 14 assists) in 76 games last season and could play a significant role in the Rangers’ defense, especially if Jacob Trouba is moved.
In return, the Rangers would give up Lindgren, a 26-year-old defenseman who scored 17 points in 76 games last season, as well as two prospects. Othmann, a forward selected 16th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, played 3 NHL games last season without recording any points but posted 49 points in 67 AHL games. Vaisanen, drafted 106th overall in 2021, had no points in 3 AHL games last season.
Rangers GM Chris Drury acknowledges the pressure to win, especially as the team has consistently performed well but hasn’t secured a Stanley Cup during their recent playoff runs. Drury expressed optimism for the upcoming season and confidence in head coach Peter Laviolette as the team aims for another playoff appearance.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks have named veteran forward Nick Foligno as their 35th captain. Foligno, who recently signed a two-year, $9 million extension, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team during a critical period in its development.
