The New York Yankees announced that they have released left-handed reliever. He struggled to find consistency in Triple-A. He was originally acquired in an offseason trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a deal that also brought infield prospect Jorbit Vivas to the Yankees, while top prospect Trey Sweeney was sent to the Dodgers.
Although He didn’t pan out for the Yankees, the trade isn’t considered a total failure. Vivas is still with the organization and is seen as a potential part of the team’s future. Meanwhile, Sweeney has since moved on to the Detroit Tigers and is now getting his shot in MLB.
He, who posted a 3.86 ERA with the Yankees earlier in the season, was designated for assignment in June when the team needed to clear a roster spot. Despite the decent ERA, his peripherals were a concern, with 13 walks and only 11 strikeouts in 23.1 innings. The Yankees ultimately decided his performance wasn’t sustainable and sent him to Triple-A before now granting his unconditional release.
After 22 innings in Triple-A Scranton, Victor Gonzalez’s time with the Yankees has ended with an unimpressive 4.50 ERA, far from what the team had hoped when they traded for him. Initially, the move made sense, as Gonzalez had a solid career ERA of 3.36 and the Yankees were in need of a left-handed bullpen option. However, things didn’t pan out as expected, and both sides are now moving on.
Despite his struggles, there remains a possibility that Gonzalez could catch the eye of another team in need of bullpen help for the final stretch of the season. Now a free agent, he has the option to choose his next destination — though it’s clear that it won’t be the Yankees.
