Jedd Fisch has been very transparent about the importance of recruiting offensive linemen to achieve success on the field. With four prospects already committed to the 2025 class, some might have thought the recruiting at that position was complete. However, Fisch and Carroll remain eager for more talent.
The coaching staff has managed to flip OT Jack Shaffer from Iowa State, where he had been committed since late April. The skilled tackle from Bismarck, ND started drawing interest from UW around the end of August but did not initially report receiving an offer. Along with quietly securing an offer, Shaffer also made an under-the-radar official visit during the Eastern Michigan game.
Major Expectations:
You can immediately see that he’s physically impressive, matching every bit of his listed 6’6″ and 315 pounds. After watching his film, one thing stands out on every play: he consistently puts defenders on the ground. Whether it’s edge rushers, linebackers at the second level, or anyone in between, he flattens them on nearly every snap. Despite his size, he moves lightly on his feet and has no trouble reaching the second level.
It’s common for the majority of high school linemen, but his technique does need refining. I try not to be too critical of prospects for this reason. However, one area he’ll need to focus on is his pad level. Right now, his size and strength allow him to dominate his competition, but when he faces Big Ten-level opponents, that could become a vulnerability.
Husky fans should be excited! There has been a lot of concern about the state of the offensive line since Fisch’s arrival, and bringing in another skilled tackle should help ease those worries. This is especially true considering many thought the staff was done recruiting for the 2025 class. Champ Taulelea and Jake Flores are expected to play guard, Lowen Colman-Brusa will likely serve as a versatile player starting at center, Zac Stascausky will be competing for the left tackle spot, and now Shaffer will add depth and competition at right tackle.
