Just In: Jedd Fisch Explains Surprise Decision to Leave UW After Apple Cup Loss

University of Washington (UW) head coach Jedd Fisch addressed the media today to explain his decision to part ways with the Huskies following their disappointing loss to Washington State in the Apple Cup. The defeat, which ended UW’s season on a somber note, has prompted Fisch to step down from his position.

In a press conference held at UW’s athletic facility, Fisch expressed his deep regret over the timing of his departure but emphasized that the decision was made with careful consideration and for personal reasons. “This has been a challenging season for us, and while the Apple Cup loss was a significant factor, my decision to leave was based on a variety of factors that I’ve been weighing for some time,” Fisch stated. “I believe it’s the right step for me and for the program moving forward.”

Fisch, who took over as head coach of the Huskies in 2021, has faced a series of ups and downs during his tenure. This season, the team showed promise early on but struggled with consistency, culminating in a 27-20 loss to the Cougars that dashed hopes for a bowl game. Fisch’s departure follows a season that saw the Huskies finish with a 5-7 record.

The Apple Cup defeat was particularly disheartening, given the rivalry’s significance and the high expectations set at the start of the season. Fisch acknowledged the impact of the loss on his decision, saying, “Losing the Apple Cup was a tough blow, not just for me but for everyone involved with the program. I understand the disappointment and frustration of our fans and players.”

During his tenure, Fisch made strides in rebuilding the Huskies program, including a notable improvement in recruiting and player development. However, he faced challenges with injuries and inconsistencies on both sides of the ball. Despite these difficulties, Fisch’s commitment to the team and his efforts to elevate UW football were evident throughout his time as head coach.

In his address, Fisch thanked the UW community, including the players, coaching staff, and fans, for their support during his tenure. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at the University of Washington. The support I’ve received from the administration, my coaching staff, and especially the players has been invaluable. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and will always cherish my time here,” Fisch said.

The search for Fisch’s successor will now begin. UW athletic director Jen Cohen stated, “We appreciate everything Coach Fisch has done for the program and wish him the best in his future endeavors. We are committed to finding a new head coach who will build on the progress we’ve made and lead the Huskies to future success.”

As Fisch prepares to step away from the program, his focus will shift to his next career move. While he did not provide specific details about his future plans, he indicated that he remains passionate about football and is exploring new opportunities within the sport.

The University of Washington will conduct a thorough search for a new head coach in the coming weeks, with the goal of finding a candidate who aligns with the program’s vision and can guide the Huskies to renewed success.
