Audric Estime, the Denver Broncos’ running back, has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four weeks, including Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team announced the change after Estime did not practice on Wednesday.
Estime, a rookie running back from Notre Dame, has earned a spot in the rotation with Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin. With Estime out for the next four weeks, rookie Blake Watson and shifty running back Tyler Badie will have an opportunity to step up. The Broncos added fullback Michael Burton to their active roster.
This is a setback to the Broncos’ running game, which averaged less than four yards per carry against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Quarterback Bo Nix was by far the most efficient runner, with the majority of those coming on scrambles rather than intended quarterback runs. He had five carries for 35 yards and one touchdown. Estime had two carries for 14 yards before leaving the game.
McLaughlin and Williams each averaged less than three yards per carry on 18 rushes. They rushed for only 50 yards, averaging 2.7 yards per carry against the Seahawks front, which hampered their ground attack all day.
