LSU football is facing a major challenge with the season-ending injury of starting defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the Tigers’ 44-21 win over Nicholls State. Guillory, a dedicated fifth-year senior, will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 season, leaving a significant gap in the Tigers’ defensive line. With a crucial SEC matchup against South Carolina approaching, and ESPN’s College Gameday set to be in Columbus, SC, the atmosphere will be electric and the stakes high.
Brian Kelly acknowledged the impact of losing Guillory, noting the defense will need to find a replacement to fill his strong inside presence. “You’re losing a very strong inside presence to your defense, and so you’ve got to look at who can make up for that,” Kelly remarked. “With College Gameday, it’s going to be a great environment. A great opportunity for us to take a step in the development of our football team and continue to work to get better.”
The Tigers will need to address their defensive shortcomings swiftly. Despite missing a key player, Nicholls State managed a 13-play, 84-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter and another lengthy drive late in the first half. LSU also allowed a 67-yard touchdown run to start the second half.
Kelly stressed the importance of adaptability in light of Guillory’s injury. While this setback is significant, LSU boasts a roster filled with five-star recruits and highly sought-after transfers, which will be vital in overcoming this challenge and staying in contention for the College Football Playoffs.
LSU fans will be closely watching to see how the Tigers adjust and respond, with high expectations for the team’s performance regardless of the available players.
LSU football going into ESPN Gameday with a committee approach
With Guillory out for the season, several players are anticipated to rise to the occasion, each bringing different strengths to the defensive line, according to Kelly.
“Guillory was a cornerstone for us,” Kelly noted. “He was a big, physical presence at the point of attack and a technically proficient, strong player. We know what we’re losing in terms of that skill set, but we also recognize what he wasn’t—he wasn’t a dynamic pass rusher, and he’d be the first to admit that.”
Kelly indicated that they have strategies to compensate for Guillory’s absence with adjustments to the defensive front.
Key candidates to step up include Ahmad Breaux, Jay’viar Suggs, and Jalen Lee, all of whom saw action in the narrow loss to USC. Junior college transfer Shone Washington also played against Nicholls State. Additionally, Dominick McKinley and Paris Shand could be shifted around the line to provide different looks against SEC opponents.
A victory against South Carolina is crucial for the injury-depleted Tigers, as failing to win could severely diminish their chances of clinching the SEC West. Upcoming games against top-five teams Alabama and Ole Miss will present much tougher challenges compared to Nicholls State, who managed to stay competitive longer than expected at Tiger Stadium.
