Last season, the Baltimore Ravens cut Angelo Blackson as they trimmed their preseason roster to meet the regular-season limit. Despite this, the former Auburn defensive tackle went on to play 11 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023.
On August 26, the Denver Broncos released Blackson while finalizing their preseason roster for the regular season. However, as seen last season, being released doesn’t necessarily mean Blackson’s NFL career is over for 2024.
On Tuesday, the Arizona Cardinals added Blackson to their practice squad. Players on the practice squad can be promoted to the active roster just before games, with each team allowed to elevate up to two practice-squad players per game.
This marks Blackson’s second stint with the Cardinals. He previously played in 16 games, starting nine, and matched his career-high with 2.5 sacks for Arizona in 2020.
The Cardinals lost their season opener to the Buffalo Bills 34-28 on Sunday. They will begin their home season against the Los Angeles Rams at 3:05 p.m. CDT on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
A fourth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2015, Blackson has played for five NFL teams. After two years with the Titans, he was on the New England Patriots’ practice squad before joining the Houston Texans for the final nine games of the 2017 season.
Blackson played in every game in 2018 and started 15 regular-season games and two playoff games in 2019. Despite his contributions, the Texans released him at the end of the 2020 preseason.
He signed with the Cardinals just before the 2020 season started and appeared in every game for Arizona that year. Blackson then signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Chicago Bears in 2021 as a free agent.
After 32 games and 12 starts with the Bears over two seasons, Blackson joined the Ravens for the 2023 season but was released on August 29, 2023. He quickly signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Blackson signed a one-year contract with the Broncos on April 15.
Over his NFL career, which includes 128 regular-season games and 42 starts, Blackson has recorded 179 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits, one interception, eight pass breakups, one forced fumble, and four fumble recoveries. He has also appeared in three postseason games.
