The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star third baseman on the 10-day injured list due to a strain in his left hand.
He sustained the injury while swinging during a game against the Atlanta Braves on August 29. Despite initially staying with the team and hoping for a quick recovery, Bohm’s condition did not improve as anticipated, leading the Phillies to remove him from the active roster.
“I don’t want to be a liability for the team by not being able to play,” Bohm stated. “We’re down a man on the bench, and if something unexpected happens, we could be in trouble.”
Alec Bohm participated in defensive drills and took dry swings as recently as Thursday, when the Phillies began a four-game series in Miami against the Marlins. However, since he couldn’t progress to hitting live pitches, it became evident that he couldn’t continue with the team.
“It’s pretty ineffective until I can swing properly,” Bohm said. “It reached a point where swinging was not possible.”
Bohm recalled experiencing similar pain in 2021, which caused him to miss 16 days. He described the discomfort as feeling like his hand was struck by a hammer.
“We’ll focus on strengthening the hand and doing everything possible to alleviate the pain,” Bohm explained. “I’ll rest and let it heal so I can be ready when it’s fully recovered.”
Prior to his injury, the 28-year-old Bohm was enjoying a strong season, contributing significantly to the Phillies’ eight-game lead in the NL East as of Friday.
With a batting average of .290 and 89 RBIs, Bohm is tied with teammate Kyle Schwarber for fifth place in the National League. He was also chosen as the NL starting third baseman for this year’s All-Star Game.
