The Boston Bruins’ off-season has been marked by unexpected events and ongoing drama. One of the biggest shocks was trading fan-favorite goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, with many feeling the return was underwhelming. The team has bolstered its roster with key additions, including center Elias Lindholm to strengthen their forward lineup and physical defenseman Nikita Zadorov to enhance their blue line.
Despite these moves, the most significant issue remains unresolved contract negotiations with star goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Reports indicate that an agreement is still far off, with tensions rising. According to former NHL player Ryan Whitney on the “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast, the Bruins’ latest offer to Swayman was a four-year deal at $6.2 million annually (AAV). This offer has been seen by many as low given Swayman’s performance as one of the league’s top young goalies.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed Whitney’s report and added that Swayman is seeking around $10 million AAV, or possibly something closer to the $9.5 million AAV of teammate Charlie McAvoy’s eight-year deal. This significant gap in negotiations raises concerns about whether a deal will be reached before the season starts.
With just over a month remaining until the regular season begins, the Bruins are under pressure to resolve this issue. Following the trade of Ullmark, the situation in goal is precarious, and Swayman will play a crucial role in maintaining the team’s competitiveness in the Eastern Conference.
As the deadline approaches, fans and analysts are anxiously awaiting updates, knowing that the outcome of this negotiation could greatly impact the Bruins’ success this season.
Drafted by the Bruins in the fourth round of 2017, Swayman has appeared in 132 games for the team, boasting a record of 79-33-15, a career GAA of 2.34, and a solid .919 save percentage.
