LATEST: Washington Nationals Receive Bad News After Terrible Injury to Star

The Washington Nationals are still hoping that a pitcher who has been out since June can return this season.
Cade Cavalli threw a bullpen session for the Washington Nationals earlier this week, but the injured pitcher is no closer to returning to the game and he may not get another chance the rest of the season.

Cavalli’s bullpen at loan Depot Park in Miami lasted 20 pitches, his first since being shut down on June 21 because to a dead arm following a rehab start in his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

According to MLB.com, Cavalli’s bullpen consisted entirely of fastballs, with the top pitch reaching 93 mph.

The Nationals want the Top 30 prospect to face batters before the season finishes. This could be a live batting practice or a minor league game. But that is the goal they hope he can achieve.

Minor league seasons end in a few weeks, and the Major League season closes on September 29.

“Hopefully, we get him to that point,” manager Dave Martinez stated. “If we don’t, we still have, you know, months to progress him and get him ready for Spring Training.”

Spring training may be a more realistic option for the No. 8 prospect, who hasn’t pitched in a Major League game since his debut in 2022.

Cavalli, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher, was Washington’s first-round choice in 2020 out of Oklahoma, one of the country’s premier college schools.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma native worked his way through their organization in 2021 and 2022 before being promoted to the Nationals and making his Major League debut on August 26, 2022.

He made one start and took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs and six hits. He had six strikeouts and two walks.

The trouble began immediately following his outing, when he was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder irritation.
