Dean Kremer not only avoided the injured list, but he’s also set to start Friday night in the series opener against the Rays at Camden Yards. This comes after a scary incident where a 103.1 mph line drive from Colorado’s Jordan Beck struck his right forearm during Saturday’s game at Coors Field, leaving a large welt and raising concerns about the Orioles’ rotation.
Despite the impact, Kremer was able to play catch in the outfield, complete a bullpen session at Camden Yards, and convince the Orioles he was ready to pitch. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who had initially doubted Kremer’s quick return, expressed surprise at his readiness.
Zach Eflin will start on Saturday, and Corbin Burnes will take the mound Sunday. The Rays, who have struggled against the Orioles this season (going 2-8), will counter with Shane Baz, Ryan Pepiot, and Zack Littell.
Kremer, who missed six weeks earlier this season due to a right triceps strain, had made three consecutive quality starts before being hit by the line drive. The Orioles have faced multiple injuries this season, with pitchers Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells undergoing elbow surgeries and being ruled out until 2025.
Kremer’s return is a significant relief for the team as they push towards the playoffs.
