Injury Update: Braves Receive More Bad News On Injured Star

Atlanta Braves infielder Whit Merrifield made headlines this week after being struck in the head by Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Criswell. Merrifield was pulled from the game and tested for a concussion, which he happily did not have.

Following the game, Merrifield made a broad comment regarding the state of MLB pitching. Merrifield specifically emphasized the velocity that pitchers are obliged to throw at these days, and how it frequently hinders their control.

“The current state of the game is ridiculous,” Merrifield stated. “I hate where the game’s at right now with that.”

Whit Merrifield was right to criticize MLB’s pitching philosophy

Merrifield stressed that his safety was in jeopardy, referencing the multiple Braves players who have been injured by hit-by-pitches (HBPs) this season. He pointed out that in just a few weeks, the team had nearly lost key players like Austin Riley, Mike Soroka, and Travis d’Arnaud. He criticized the lack of control from pitchers who, in his words, throw as hard as possible without caring about the accuracy, calling the situation “bulls—-.”

Merrifield’s argument highlights how modern pitchers are sacrificing control for speed, which he attributes to their early training. The emphasis on throwing harder from a young age has led some pitchers to prioritize velocity over precision, resulting in more dangerous pitches.

Whit Merrifield’s injury update is more frightening than it seems for Braves

Merrifield is considered day-to-day according to the Braves’ training staff. However, updates from the team’s website suggest a more complex situation. While he passed concussion tests, Merrifield was still feeling groggy when he arrived at Truist Park, and he experiences discomfort when wearing a hat. Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed his day-to-day status.

This situation recalls the cautionary tale of Anthony Rizzo, who was placed on the injured list last season two months after suffering a head injury. Initially diagnosed with a stiff neck, Rizzo’s season ended after he struggled at the plate. The Braves must be careful with Merrifield, particularly if his symptoms persist.
