– 1996: Marquis Grissom starts the game with a leadoff home run off Dave Burba, but it turns out to be Atlanta’s only hit in a 5-1 loss to the Reds.

-1906: Ty Cobb returns to the Detroit lineup after a six-week absence, recording a single and a steal but misplaying a fly ball into a home run, leading to a 1-0 loss for the Tigers.
-1921: Babe Ruth hits his 50th home run of the season, helping the Yankees to a 9-3 victory over the Senators.
-1928: Ty Cobb logs the final hit of his career, a pinch-hit double for the A’s against Bump Hadley.
-1939 – As the 6:30 pm Sunday curfew looms, the Yankees start delaying play to avoid a loss in Boston. Fenway Park fans become furious, throwing cushions and debris onto the field. Umpire Cal Hubbard awards the game to the Yankees, but American League president Will Harridge overrules this decision, declaring the game a 5-5 tie and fining the Yankees.

-1965 – The Los Angeles Angels change their name to the California Angels in preparation for their move to Anaheim.
-1984 – Bruce Sutter sets a new National League record for saves in a season with his 38th as the Cardinals defeat the Mets 7-3.
-1992 – Baseball owners vote 18-9 to call for the resignation of commissioner Fay Vincent.
