Alex Smith, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Columbus (Ohio) Upper Arlington, has committed to Ohio State, according to 247Sports. Smith is the second commitment in Jake Diebler’s 2026 class, joining four-star guard Marcus Johnson. Diebler is focusing on bringing Ohio kids home.
“I chose Ohio State because I have had a relationship coach Diebler for about a year now and once he got the job he didn’t stop recruiting me,” replied Smith. “He worked more to recruit me. The faculty attended all of my AAU games and showed me affection that I did not receive from any of the other colleges. I believe they will do well this year, and I hope to contribute to that when I am on campus.”
Smith grew up within 15 minutes from the Ohio State campus, and today is the day he makes his aspirations come true by committing to his local team.
“I grew up being an Ohio State fan, ever since I was born I have been wearing Ohio State stuff,” Smith added. “Everyone around me is an Ohio State supporter, and it feels like a goal. You have these ambitions when you’re younger to play in the NFL or for specific clubs; for me, it was to play for Ohio State, and as I grew older, it grew even bigger. That offer was fantastic, and now I’m committing to the school where I wanted to be.”
Smith is currently unranked in the 2026 recruiting class, but his size, shot-making ability, and long-term potential project him as a four-year contributor for the Buckeyes.
“To Buckeye Nation, I’m bringing a gritty player with a chip on his shoulder,” said Smith. “I’m bringing someone who is determined to win a National Championship. I can shoot the ball, and I use that to force defenders to close out on me aggressively. When they do, it opens up my driving game and creates opportunities to facilitate for others.”
