Breaking News: Top Experienced Nationals Veteran Returns From Terrible Injury

Veteran reliever Derek Law was activated by the Washington Nationals from the 15-day injured list on Monday morning, as reported by Mark Zuckerman of MASN. Law had been sidelined since mid-August due to ulnar nerve irritation in his right elbow. He is expected to make his return during the upcoming series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday and Wednesday. This move follows the decision to option reliever Orlando Ribalta to Triple-A after his poor performance against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Derek Law, 33, signed a minor league deal with the Nationals in February and was added to the roster the following month after making the Opening Day lineup. When healthy, Law has been a dependable presence on the mound, boasting an impressive 2.85 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP with 61 strikeouts. He even secured a save on July 4 against the New York Mets, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-pressure situations. Law’s pitching arsenal primarily includes a 92 mph cutter and an 87 mph slider, along with a 95 mph 4-seam fastball and a 95 mph sinker.

Law has been in the majors since 2016, playing for six different teams, including the Nationals. He made his MLB debut in April 2016 with the San Francisco Giants, where he remained until 2018. He then played for the Toronto Blue Jays (2019), Minnesota Twins (2021), Detroit Tigers (2022), and Cincinnati Reds (2022-2023). In 2020, Law signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers but didn’t play any games due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born in Pittsburgh, Law was drafted by the Giants in the ninth round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Miami Dade College. He gained significant experience within the Giants’ farm system before being called up to the major leagues in April 2016.
