Auburn football will start the 2024 season 14 years since their last championship. The Tigers clinched the title in 2010, finishing with a perfect 14-0 record led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton. Auburn’s other unbeaten season occurred in 2004 under head coach Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville, who is now a United States Senator from Alabama, was the Tigers’ head coach from 1999 to 2008 before coaching at Cincinnati and Texas Tech.
Tuberville remains deeply connected to football while serving in the Senate. Recently, Alabama Prep (Morgan Academy) quarterback Caden Tellier suffered a severe brain injury during his team’s season opener against Southern Academy and tragically passed away the following day. This incident occurred in Tuberville’s home state and near Auburn. The senator extended his condolences and support to the Morgan Academy community in light of the tragedy.
Longtime Auburn Football Coach Turned Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville Saddened by Tragic Death of Local High School QB
According to Tommy Tuberville on his Twitter:
We are heartbroken about Caden Tellier’s death. Caden was an incredible young man who will be deeply missed. I’m praying for his family, friends, and the entire Morgan Academy community.
According to accounts, Caden Tellier, 16, of Selma, Alabama, died as a result of a “ruptured blood vessel in his brain,” making him the most recent high school football player to die. Meanwhile, Semaj Wilkins, a football player from New Brockton, Alabama, died earlier this month from a heat-related incident.
Tuberville voiced his regret about the circumstances this week, engaging in grieving with the Morgan Academy community, where Caden Tellier led the team in passing and rushing yards the previous year. Tuberville has long been associated with the state of Alabama. Tuberville, an Arkansas native, spent ten seasons coaching football at Auburn University, one of Alabama’s largest and most prestigious institutions. Tuberville defeated Democratic nominee Doug Jones in the 2020 Alabama Senate election.
