With uncertainty surrounding the availability of Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin for next season, the Colorado Avalanche could greatly benefit from having a healthy Artturi Lehkonen. Following off-season shoulder surgery, there have been concerns about whether Lehkonen will be ready for the start of training camp in three weeks.
There is a possibility that he might be somewhat restricted at the beginning of camp, but there are positive indications that he will be fit to play when the Avalanche kick off their season on October 9 in Las Vegas.
Lehkonen has skated at Family Sports for the past two days, practicing with a few teammates preparing for the season. Although he’s clearly being cautious with his shot, it’s reassuring to see him handling the puck. The Avalanche previously mentioned that they would have a clearer update on his condition around Labor Day, which is this coming weekend.
Captured in the video is Lehkonen from today’s informal skate. While it’s possible that the Avalanche may start camp with him somewhat limited—since there’s no need to rush his recovery—this news is still promising.
At 29, Lehkonen plays a crucial role for the Avalanche, contributing significantly on both power plays and penalty kills, as well as at even strength. His playing style, while effective, makes him more prone to injuries.
You might also notice Logan O’Connor in some of the footage. He appears to be on track to be ready for camp, which has been the anticipated outcome for some time.
The group skating at Family Sports is still relatively small. Most players typically start arriving around Labor Day, so we can expect a larger turnout next week.
