Breaking News: LSU Announce the Signing of a New Coach

He has been the Houston Astros Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator since November 2023, has been appointed as the LSU Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coach, according to an announcement from head coach Jay Johnson on Wednesday.

Originally from Mason, Ohio, Martin has dedicated the past six seasons to various positions within the Astros organization, most recently as the Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. His role was marked by a deep commitment to player development and enhancing on-field performance.

“I’m thrilled to bring Chris Martin on board as our LSU Baseball Strength Coach,” Johnson stated. “Chris is precisely what we need at LSU as we aim to develop future Major League stars and build championship-caliber teams through our strength program. His blend of intelligence, exceptional work ethic, and expertise in creating advanced strength programs sets him apart.”

Johnson also noted that the Astros are known for their innovative approach to player development, and Martin’s experience with the organization will greatly benefit LSU. “Chris joining us as our new strength coach is a tremendous boost for both our current and future players’ development.”

During his tenure with the Astros, Martin managed all aspects of strength and conditioning for Minor League players, including those at the Dominican Republic Academy. In 2024, ten Astros players made their Major League debuts under his guidance.

Martin previously worked as the Astros Rehab Strength & Conditioning Coordinator for two-and-a-half years, focusing on training injured players and helping to revamp Houston’s return-to-play protocols, including a new return-to-throw program for post-surgical athletes.

He also held positions as a Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coach (2019-2021) and as a Strength & Conditioning apprentice, starting in June 2019 at the team’s Spring Training Complex in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Martin completed an internship in the summer of 2018 at Cressey Sports Performance in Hudson, Mass., a leading baseball training facility.

He holds both an M.S. (2019) and B.S. (2018) in Exercise Physiology from Kent State University, where he pitched for five seasons and was part of two MAC regular-season championship teams and a MAC Tournament championship in 2018.
