The running back position had been the missing piece for North Carolina in this recruiting class, but that changed on Friday when Demon June announced his commitment to the Tar Heels at a ceremony held at his high school.
June’s decision came just three weeks after UNC offered him a spot on the team. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Jacksonville High player received the offer during the “Carolympics,” a recruiting event hosted by the Tar Heels before the Summer Dead Period resumed.
“I love the coaching staff and the genuine relationship I’ve built with Coach Mack Brown,” June shared with Inside Carolina after returning from the Carolympics. “Every time I visited, Coach Brown has been incredibly supportive, and I’ve learned something valuable from each interaction with him. The overall experience on campus feels unmatched.”
Last fall, June made his first visit to UNC as a guest of a teammate for a game, which put him on the Tar Heels’ recruiting radar. He returned early this summer for UNC’s first individual camp, where his performance set the stage for a scholarship offer.
Earlier this summer, June also took official visits to East Carolina and Georgia Southern. Besides those two, he received scholarship offers from Appalachian State, Connecticut, James Madison, Ohio, Old Dominion, and Toledo.
Throughout the offseason, schools like Florida, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and South Carolina, much like UNC, closely monitored June’s progress.
During his junior year, June averaged 10.2 yards per rush (1,206 yards on 118 carries) and scored 24 touchdowns (21 rushing, two receiving, and one on an interception return).
June has been a key player for Jacksonville High’s offense since his freshman year, amassing 3,299 yards and 60 touchdowns on 396 career carries as he heads into his senior season.
June is now UNC’s third in-state commitment and 14th overall in this recruiting class, joining four-star quarterback Bryce Baker and mid-three-star offensive lineman Trey Blue, who committed earlier.
