Alabama’s three-year contract with football GM Courtney Morgan, worth an average of $825,000 per year, is expected to revolutionize the sport as we know it by placing a heavy financial focus on a job that was previously only found in professional sports.
Jim Nagy, Executive Director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, described it as a “game-changer” in the scouting scene for both Division I and NFL football.
“Massive deal for anyone working in college football or NFL player personnel,” Nagy said, before adding, “Rapid and exponential revenue increases at both levels have reached players and coaches, but evaluation roles haven’t seen anywhere near the same growth.” This transaction could/should transform the scouting landscape.”
ESPN’s Pete Thamel addressed the future of college football, referring to million-dollar front offices in what was once an amateur sport.
“College football is changing fast,” Thamel stated. “We’re on the cusp of front office million-dollar salaries.”
Morgan was Kalen DeBoer’s first Crimson Tide hiring and will play just as important a role in the post-Nick Saban era as “Husky Harsin.”
Who is Auburn’s football general manager?
Will Redmond is Auburn’s General Manager of Player Personnel. Footballscoop’s John Brice referred to his employment as a “big boy move” for Hugh Freeze and Co.
Auburn is up to date on this industrial trend. Quite the reverse.
Despite paying big buyouts to both Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin, AU has done well to gather funds through the On To Victory NIL collective and its strong base of boosters to compete and thrive on the recruiting trail throughout Freeze’s reign. That all started with extravagant front office spending.
Redmond’s impact on the product will be felt in 2025 and beyond, as the headline 2024 flips occurred before his arrival in January. However, after his arrival, Derick Smith, Alvin Henderson, and Antonio Coleman have proven to be game changers.
The Tigers are prepared for the college football front-office arms race.
