Breaking News: LSU Football Flips Another 4-Star Commitment From Bitter Rivals

Around six weeks after committing to the Texas Longhorns over the LSU Tigers, Fort Bend Hightower defensive back switched his commitment to LSU, dealing a blow to Texas’ 2025 recruiting class, particularly in the secondary.

Phillips initially chose Texas because of the opportunities the program offered him. He told On3 at the time of his commitment that he appreciated how Texas viewed him as a versatile player, capable of filling multiple positions, which could help him get on the field quickly. He was also drawn to the atmosphere in Austin and the sense of family he felt from the UT staff, including coach Steve Sarkisian, who regularly checked in on him.

However, LSU’s persistence, particularly from defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, eventually paid off. Phillips shared with On3 that LSU had remained in close contact even after he committed to Texas, consistently texting and calling him.

Phillips is now the second Texas commit in the 2025 class to flip to LSU, following Melbourne (Fla.) Eau Gallie defensive tackle Brandon Brown. This development leaves Texas with just one defensive back commit, Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Caleb Chester, who is the lowest-rated of the 16 current pledges for Texas. This is another setback in a disappointing recruiting cycle for Texas, especially considering their success on the field last season and their upcoming move to the SEC.

Texas, however, has a chance to recover from the loss of Phillips, with Ruston (La.) cornerback Aiden Anding set to announce his decision on August 24.
