Breaking News: Phillies receive devastating injury update on two key stars

  • Ranger Suárez (lower back soreness)
  • Status: 15-day injury list.
Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 for low back pain, retroactive to July 24.
On August 17, Suárez hosted a simulated game at Citizens Bank Park. He tossed 57 pitches over four innings, with an additional 20 in the bullpen. His velocity was about 91 mph, which the Phillies were pleased with in a simulation game. If Suárez performs well in the simulation game, manager Rob Thomson believes “there’s a good chance we could get him back in Kansas City.” The Phillies will play the Royals from August 23 to 25.(Last updated by Tim Kelly on August 17).
  • Austin Hays (left hamstring strain)
  • Status: Ten-day injury list.
Hays was placed on the 10-day disabled list by the Phillies due to a left hamstring strain, retroactive to August 8.
Hays collided with Suárez during the simulation game on August 17. He homered in the first inning and ran effectively, including some first-to-thirds. Thomson stated, “there’s a chance he does a rehab assignment for a couple days.” When asked if Hays could return during the Kansas City series, Thomson answered, “Potentially, yes.”(Last modified by Tim Kelly on August 17.)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injury list.
To create room for Tyler Gilbert on the 40-man roster, RHP Spencer Turnbull was placed on the 60-day disabled list on August 17. Thomson did, however, point out that Turnbull’s transfer to the 60-day IL does not prevent him from pitching again this season, as he was initially placed on the IL on June 27.
In reality, Thomson stated that Turnbull’s throwing program will resume sometime this week, and that he is “feeling a lot better” after a setback in his recovery from a right lat strain. (Last modified by Tim Kelly on August 17.)
  • Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
  • Status: 60-day injury list, currently on rehab assignment.
As of August 9, Covey had made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His previous appearance was on August 4, when he gave one earned run in three innings for Reading against Hartford.(Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on August 9).
  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injury list.
On July 11, Ortiz underwent a successful Tommy John surgery.(Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12).

Young Philadelphia Phillies' Andrew Painter May Win The Team's Fifth Starter Role

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor League 60-day disabled list.
The Phillies’ top minor league prospect underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
Painter throws 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He’s simply throwing fastballs and changeups right now. Thomson would not rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games – a controlled environment — before the end of the year. However, he does not expect to pitch for an affiliate in 2024.(Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29.)
