The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Jake Fromm to bolster their roster at a position hampered by Hendon Hooker’s recent concussion.
“We felt like he’d be able to pick up the offense quickly enough to go out and help us if necessary,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday night.
Detroit did not want to play a preseason game in Kansas City on Saturday night with just Jared Goff and Nate Sudfeld available.
Fromm, 26, went 0-2 as a starter for the New York Giants in 2021. Washington released the former Georgia star three months ago, after Buffalo drafted him in the fifth round in 2020.
“We needed somebody we felt like could work in the pocket and he was fortunately available,” Campbell shared. “He had a workout (Monday), looked pretty good, so we’ll see where it goes.”
The Lions hoped Hooker would gain vital experience in his second NFL season after suffering a knee injury that halted his college career.
Hooker was injured on a run in the third quarter of a preseason game against the Giants last Thursday, his first game back in 21 months after damaging a ligament in his left knee as a fifth-year senior for the Tennessee Volunteers.
He completed five of nine passes for 36 yards and carried four times for 34 yards, including a 16-yard rush.
Detroit drafted Hooker in the third round last year, knowing he would not play as a rookie but hoped he would develop into a competent backup.
The defending NFC North champions gave Goff a $212 million, four-year agreement in May and will begin the regular season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8 as they look to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
