For the most part, Florida Football has managed to steer clear of significant injuries this training camp. Although Jamari Lyons suffered a leg injury during Saturday’s scrimmage and Montrell Johnson is dealing with a knee problem, the team has avoided any season-ending injuries to its key starters.
Given the injuries affecting two crucial players on the Gators’ upcoming schedule, Florida is likely to view their current situation with some relief.
Florida Football: Wear And Tear
Last week, it was reported that Texas running back CJ Baxter sustained a knee injury during practice, resulting in tears to his LCL and PCL. Baxter is set to undergo surgery and will miss the entire 2024 season.
In his freshman year in 2023, Baxter rushed 138 times for 659 yards and five touchdowns, and also added 156 receiving yards. He earned a spot on the Doak Walker Award watchlist and was named to the second-team all-preseason squad. A top 30 prospect from the 2023 class, Baxter was anticipated to play a significant role for Texas this season.
Florida is scheduled to face Texas on November 9 in Austin.
Meanwhile, in College Station, Texas A&M also experienced a setback over the weekend, losing its starting running back Rueben Owens to a “lower body injury.” Owens is also expected to miss the 2024 season.
Owens, a freshman in 2023, carried the ball 101 times for 385 yards and three touchdowns during his debut year. As a former top-50 prospect, he was expected to make a notable impact in 2024.
Florida will play host to Texas A&M on September 14.
