Phillies make a post-deadline trade for Nelson L. Alvarez from the Rays

According to Phillies Tailgate on X (previously Twitter), the Phillies acquired right-handed pitcher Nelson L. Alvarez from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday for financial considerations. He’ll report to Double-A Reading Fightin Phils.
The New York Yankees selected Alvarez, 26, in the 13th round of the 2019 draft. He spent three years in the Yankees’ development system before being taken off waivers by the Rays following the 2022 season.

This season, he appeared in 27 games for the Rays’ Double-A and Triple-A clubs. He was 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, striking out 38 in 35 1/3 innings.

Alvarez’s most notable flaw has been his lack of control. This season, he has issued 22 walks for a 5.60 BB/9. He battled with control throughout his 16 innings in Triple-A, walking 15 batters for an 8.44 BB/9.

After struggling to a 5.19 ERA in his past 13 Double-A appearances with the Montgomery Biscuits, the Rays placed the Miami native on the Development List on August 1, according to his MiLB transactions page.

Alvarez throws two pitches: a fastball and a slider. His fastball averaged 94-97 mph while with the Yankees and was anticipated to be an above-average offering, according to FanGraphs’ 2021 prospect scouting report.

In 152 bullpen appearances over five minor league seasons, Alvarez has a 5.04 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 248 strikeouts in 203 2/3 innings. He has 19 holds and 10 minor league saves in his career, but he went 0 for 2 in save opportunities with the Biscuits this season.
