Breaking News: Rangers Confirm Blockbuster Signing for All-Star

The Rangers have signed Chase Anderson to a contract, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Anderson, who was released by the Red Sox earlier this month, previously signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in the 2023-24 offseason but was released before Opening Day.

Shortly after, he signed a major league contract with the Red Sox worth $1.25 million guaranteed. Although Anderson primarily pitched as a starter throughout his career, he joined the Red Sox’s bullpen as a multi-inning reliever. He appeared in 27 games, throwing 52 innings with a 4.85 ERA and 4.92 SIERA. Despite transitioning to a bullpen role, his pitch velocity didn’t increase significantly, and his strikeout rate of 15.6% was the lowest of his career. As a result, he served as a backup option for the Red Sox, who had to release him when they strengthened their bullpen at the trade deadline.

Over his 11 MLB seasons, Anderson has played for eight teams: the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Blue Jays, Phillies, Reds, Rays, Rockies, and Red Sox. He has also been with the Rangers, Tigers, and Pirates organizations, although he didn’t pitch for their major league teams. If his second stint with Texas proves more fruitful, the Rangers would be the ninth team he has played for in his big league career.

The Rangers are always looking to strengthen their pitching depth, and veteran relievers like Anderson could be a valuable addition. With few healthy relievers in their organization who have recent big league success, adding Anderson could be beneficial. If they choose to promote him, they will only owe him a prorated portion of the minimum salary for the duration he remains on the roster, with the Red Sox covering the remainder of his guaranteed 2024 salary.
