LSU’s expected starting cornerback, has been returned to the football program as he deals with legal
difficulties related to his arrest on accusations of video voyeurism.
Javien Toviano was present at the Tigers’ season-opening practice on Thursday, and coach Brian Kelly shared an update on the defensive back from Arlington, Texas.
“He’s back in football activities and we’ll kind of get him going again, back in the mix,” according to Kelly. “Obviously, he will be a competitive player for us. He played for us last year, and we’ll get him going while he deals with his legal issues.
It is unclear what has changed in Toviano’s instance. Hillar Moore, the East Baton Rouge District Attorney, said the matter is still being reviewed. Philip House, Toviano’s attorney, did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.
The 19-year-old sophomore was detained on July 21 after surrendering to authorities. An arrest warrant accuses him of recording himself having intercourse with a woman without her consent.
The woman told detectives she discovered videos of the two on Toviano’s iPad, which were recorded using a clock with a built-in camera positioned near the bed.
Toviano’s arrest warrant stated that during an interview with officers, he admitted to using a covert camera to capture the sexual encounters. The player was suspended on the day of the arrest and returned shortly before LSU’s first practice.
As a freshman at LSU, Toviano started three of the last five games.
