The Rockies have signed Chasen Shreve to a minor league contract, according to his MLB.com profile. Shreve was released from his previous minor league deal with the Yankees just last Thursday, and he has now quickly joined his ninth big league team in his 15-year professional career.
Shreve has played for seven of these teams at the Major League level, with 174 2/3 of his 356 career big league innings coming from two previous stints with the Yankees. Despite minor league deals with the Rangers and Yankees in 2024, Shreve did not make it back to the majors, so he will now aim to secure a spot on the Rockies’ roster to extend his MLB career to an 11th season.
Despite his journeyman status, Shreve has some solid statistics, including a career 3.97 ERA, a 25.3% strikeout rate, and a 10.8% walk rate. However, his recent seasons have been less impressive, with a 6.49 ERA in 26 1/3 innings with the Mets in 2022 and a 4.63 ERA in 44 2/3 innings with the Tigers and Reds last year. A combined 3.64 SIERA over the 2022-23 seasons suggests his performance might be better than his ERA indicates, as a particularly high home run rate in 2022 negatively impacted his numbers.
Shreve has performed well in Triple-A this year, posting a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings for the Rangers’ and Yankees’ top affiliates. His strong performance in the Pacific Coast League, particularly with Triple-A Sugar Land, suggests he might continue to excel in another hitter-friendly environment in Albuquerque. With the Rockies’ struggling bullpen and lack of left-handed options in their relief corps, Shreve could find himself back in the majors soon.
