Breaking News: Phillies to bring back their top trade acquisition

It appears that the Phillies are already considering trying to extend their major trade deadline acquisition beyond 2024.
Many people thought the Philadelphia Phillies’ transaction for Carlos Estévez was expensive. According to Baseball America, the Phillies had to dump their No. 5 and No. 7 prospects, pitchers George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri.

Both prospects were rapidly growing and developing this season, and they appeared to be on course for a bright future. So when they were both sacrificed for what could turn out to be nothing more than a rental, the Phillies fans were understandably disappointed.

Phillies already opening the window to bring back Carlos Estévez

Phillies supporters may feel a little better now after Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski’s comments following the deal. According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman, Dombrowski, who has already demonstrated his ability to keep his word, had the following to say:

“Probably a little more than you’d like to give up for a rental, but who knows, maybe we’ll sign him once the season is over, you never know,” Dombrowski said of the Phillies’ payment for Estévez’s services and what the future may hold.

 

 

According to his comments, the Phillies are already exploring the possibility of re-signing Estévez after 2024. If the Phillies can reach an agreement on an extension, the transaction might become much more lucrative in the long run, mitigating the sting of losing quality pitching prospects.

Bringing back Estévez would be worthwhile, considering he has been one of the best in the industry at closing out games this season. In 34 games, he has a 2.38 ERA and 0.74 WHIP, with 20 saves in 23 opportunities.

In fact, he has been so dominant that he hasn’t blown a save since the middle of May and has held opponents scoreless with a.054 batting average in his last 18 outings. Having Estévez for the long run should strengthen the Phillies’ bullpen, keeping the team competitive for the foreseeable future.

If you’re still unsure about how much the Phillies paid in the trade, consider what the San Diego Padres gave up to acquire closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins. In comparison, we should all be pleased that the Phillies were able to sign Estévez at a lower cost in what turned out to be a seller’s market.

More importantly, his chances of staying beyond the season have improved significantly.
