Breaking News: Yankees Release Statement on Gerrit Cole After…

Gerrit Cole was supposed to pitch for the New York Yankees against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night, but the right-hander was scratched for an unexpected reason.

The Yankees announced almost three hours before Tuesday’s game that Cole would not pitch due to “general body fatigue.” Will Warren, a right-hander, will make his MLB debut in lieu of Cole.

Any health issue with Cole is certainly a major concern for Yankees supporters. The 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner was out nearly three months at the start of the season due to elbow discomfort. He did not make his debut until June 19, and his performance has been mediocre at best in seven starts.

Cole is 3-2 this season with a 5.40 ERA. In his most recent start, a 12-3 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday, he gave 8 hits and 6 earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

The Yankees are in a tight fight in the loaded AL East and cannot afford to lose Cole. They entered Tuesday with a 63-45 record, half a game behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles.
