On the morning of trade deadline day, the Yankees announced a roster move.
The Yankees announced that minor-league infielder Jeter Downs has been released and has signed a contract to play in Japan with the Fukuoka Softank Haws.
Prior to Tuesday’s 6 p.m., EST trade deadline, the Yankees had only executed one transaction, acquiring third baseman Jazz Chiscolm from the Miami Marlins last Friday for three minor leaguers.
With or without Chiscolm, Downs had no future with the Yankees.
This season, Downs, 26, hit.264 with 10 home runs, 38 RBI, and an.858 OPS in 68 games for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
The Columbia native signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees in February and attended major-league spring training as a non-roster player.
Downs has 20 games of major league experience and has batted.182 with a homer and five RBIs. In 2023, the right-handed hitter went 6-for-39 with a home run in 14 games with the Boston Red Sox, after going 2-for-5 in six games with the Washington Nationals the previous season.
