The Detroit Tigers are anticipated to move one, if not two, starting pitchers before the MLB trade deadline on July 30. Matt Manning, a former first-round choice, would have likely filled one of the places in the final two months of the season. However, the Tigers’ Triple-A club confirmed on Friday that Manning will be placed on the minor league injured list due to a right lat strain.
Manning has made only five starts in the majors this season. In six games, he threw 27 2/3 innings with a 4.88 ERA (86 ERA+), 23 strikeouts, and 12 walks.
Detroit Tigers Place Matt Manning On Minor League Injured List
This season, the Tigers’ starting pitchers have provided plenty of depth and production. As a result, the organization was not required to give Manning or any other failing arm a roster spot this season.
This has resulted in Manning spending the majority of his season in Triple-A. Unfortunately, his minor-league performance has left much to be desired. In 12 games (11 starts), the righty has a 4.53 ERA, 60 strikeouts, and 22 walks over 59 2/3 innings.
Manning was placed on the disabled list after pitching his finest game of the season on Sunday. The 26-year-old threw six shutout innings, with four strikeouts and two walks.
Manning did, however, report the ailment to the Tigers during the MLB All-Star break, just a few days after his outing.

Triple-A Development For Manning
Following a strong spring performance, Detroit demoted Manning and assigned him the responsibility of strengthening his delivery and designing a new splitter. Ideally, these developments will help Manning stay healthy, generate more strikeouts, and perform better against left-handed batters.
Unfortunately, the most recent issue continues the former ninth overall pick’s bad health. Matt Manning has been on the disabled list in each of the previous three seasons and has failed to pitch 100 innings in a major league season. Manning has battled to stay on the field, whether it’s due to a fractured foot, a back condition, or multiple arm issues.
Nonetheless, the Tigers are sure to hold high hopes for the gifted righty. From 2022 to 2023, he had a 3.51 ERA (119 ERA+) across 141 innings. Despite his troubles this season, the gifted righty still has potential. The Tigers will hope that 2024 serves as a significant learning season for Manning’s progress.
Thoughts on Matt Manning going into 2024?
Two freaky foot injuries, but in the 78 innings he did pitch for the Tigers:
3.58 ERA
4.81 FIP
1.038 WHIP
15.8 K%
6.6 BB%
.216 BABIPNo strikeouts, but also no walks. A lot of hard contact, but they're turning into outs. xERA of 5.48.… pic.twitter.com/j2Xean09QO
