Just In: ECU Receive Groundbreaking News Involving Two Players

East Carolina defensive back Shavon Revel Jr. and wide receiver Winston Wright Jr. have been named to the East-West Shrine Bowl Watch List, as announced by the bowl association. The 100th edition of the East-West Shrine Bowl will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The game will kick off on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. (CT) and will be nationally televised in prime time on NFL Network.

Shavon Revel Jr. (Career and 2023 Biographical Sketch) A senior academically with one year of athletic eligibility left, Revel is a two-year letterman who has played in 21 career games, starting 12 (all in 2023). He earned Second-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors in 2023, recording 62 career tackles (33 solo) with 3.5 tackles for loss (TFLs) for 20 yards and 1.0 sack for 14 yards. He has 14 career pass breakups, one interception against Tulsa (2022), one forced fumble, and two blocked kicks. Revel set a career-high with eight tackles (five solo) at Navy in 2022 and was named Fourth Team Preseason All-American by Phil Steele Magazine and a Preseason First Team selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Magazine in 2024.

In 2023, Revel was named Second-Team All-American Athletic Conference by the league’s head coaches and received all-conference honors from Pro Football Focus (first team), College Football Network (third team), and Phil Steele Magazine (third team). He started all 12 games, recording 54 tackles (29 solo), 3.5 TFLs for 20 yards, and 1.0 sack for 14 yards. Revel registered at least two tackles in every game, with at least five tackles in six of them. His lone sack came against Gardner-Webb for 14 yards. He had a team-high 12 pass breakups, averaging 1.08 PBUs per game, which ranked third in The American. Revel also blocked two kicks in consecutive games to close the 2023 season and recovered a fumble at Appalachian State.

Winston Wright Jr. (Career and 2023 Biographical Sketch) A graduate student with one year of athletic eligibility remaining, Wright enrolled early at East Carolina (January 2024) and participated in spring drills. A transfer from Florida State University, he has played in 38 career games (16 starts) over four years at West Virginia (2019-21) and Florida State (2023). Wright has accumulated 2,689 all-purpose yards with nine touchdowns, catching 133 passes for 1,374 yards and seven touchdowns, and returning 53 kickoffs for 1,310 yards and two scores.

In 2023 at Florida State, Wright appeared in five games, making four catches for 36 yards (9.0 ypc). He caught one pass against LSU (18 yards) and three against Southern Miss (18 yards). Wright returned three kicks for 74 yards (24.7 avg.), with a long return of 31 yards against Southern Miss.

Revel and Wright aim to become the 15th and 16th players from East Carolina to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, following notable alumni such as DB Kevin Walker (1985), OG Chad Martin (1990), TE Luke Fisher (1991), LB Robert Jones (1991), OT Tom Scott (1993), QB Marcus Crandell (1996), DL Roderick Coleman (1998), LB Jeff Kerr (1999), Defensive lineman C.J. Wilson (2009), defensive back Emanuel Davis (2011), wide receiver Lance Lewis (2011), and linebacker Derrell Johnson (2013).
