Injury Update: Yankees star set to return after surgery but faces another setback

The New York Yankees stated today that they will reinstate right-hander Scott Effross from his rehabilitation assignment, but there is a catch. He hasn’t returned yet, and the Yankees plan to give him more reps in Triple-A while he still has Minor League options. The right-hander is still healing between outings, which makes sense given that it has been nearly two years since he last threw in the Major Leagues. Following Tommy John surgery at the end of the 2022 season, Effross underwent back surgery in December, further delaying his return.

In a related move, Cody Morris, obtained in the Estevan Florial trade, has been designated for assignment and will be placed on waivers.

Scott Effross Reinstated But Not Back With the Yankees Just Yet

Scott Effross has had two surgeries in two separate places after returning to the IL at the end of the 2022 season. While the right-hander appeared to be on track for a return after the All-Star break, the exact date remained unknown. At first look, it appeared that the Yankees would make it happen right away because they had reactivated him from the IL, but sending him to Triple-A will allow Effross to gain additional experience.

The right-hander is averaging approximately a tick lower in terms of fastball velocity, indicating that he hasn’t fully developed yet, and this should allow him to earn more work. Whether his ERA is good or bad is less crucial than his stuff returning to where it was in 2022, because, while he isn’t a hard thrower, the movement and velocity of his pitches are still critical to his performance on the mound.

Cody Morris, who had some difficult moments in Triple-A, has been designated for assignment as a result. He had a 4.25 ERA and a 16% walk rate with the Scranton RailRiders and was a roster casualty because the Yankees needed to make room on their 40-man roster by re-instating Scott Effross.
