Monday starts off the week-long circus that is SEC Media Day, and the event is expected to be even crazier than in previous years. Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC, bringing two historic programs to the event. For the third consecutive year, Brian Kelly will open SEC Media Day with discussing the LSU football program.
It’s no secret that the 2023 LSU Football squad has issues, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. The 2023 season saw the LSU football team field perhaps the nation’s top offense against the nation’s worst defense. Brian Kelly addressed his team’s defensive difficulties in 2023 during SEC Media Day, saying the following:
“Being in the playoffs and competing for titles is the standard, and we fell short of it, but ten-win seasons are difficult to come by no matter what. At the end of the day, I let rid of my entire defensive staff, so I knew we had to improve.”
– Brian Kelly
The remarks demonstrate how high the standard is at LSU and with Brian Kelly for how this program should perform. Most programs would be pleased with a ten-win season led by the Heisman Trophy winner, but at LSU, such a poor defense is unacceptable.
Blake Baker and his staff will bring massive changes
Corey Raymond, Bo Davis, and Blake Baker are now three of the top defensive coaches at LSU. Blake Baker is one of the nation’s most impressive defensive coordinators, and his plan will overhaul the LSU defense. LSU’s defensive talent has not matured to its full potential in recent seasons, but with an improved player development staff, this should no longer be an issue.
