Kirby Smart and his team are excelling in recruiting for the 2025 class, particularly in the defensive backfield.
And they’re continuing their streak.
Rashad Johnson, a safety from South Sumter (Fla.), has announced his commitment to Georgia, choosing the Bulldogs over Penn State and Texas A&M. Johnson also had offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Miami, Ole Miss, and Michigan State.
The 6’2″, 200-pound four-star prospect is ranked as the #24 safety nationally and the #33 prospect in Florida according to 247Sports.
As Wes Blankenship, a long-time friend of the site, puts it, Johnson’s hard-hitting play should excite any fan. He carries his weight well and has the frame to add more muscle in college. He’s an aggressive run defender, which is a key trait for Kirby Smart. Smart values players who can swiftly cut off running lanes and tackle ball carriers, and Johnson fits this mold.
Johnson also shows impressive acceleration, making plays from the wide receiver and tight end positions. His ability to handle the ball is a valuable asset for a defender.
One area for improvement is Johnson’s downfield coverage. He sometimes gets caught flat-footed and has to catch up with deep-route receivers, a mistake that’s less forgiving in the SEC. The Bulldogs’ coaches will work on refining his technique, but Johnson has the potential to be a versatile and solid defender.
With his size and speed, Johnson could play either free safety or star in Georgia’s defensive backfield.
Kirby Smart and his staff now have 20 commitments for the 2025 class, ranking third with 283.77 points, behind Ohio State and Alabama. Though trailing the Buckeyes, who are having an excellent recruiting cycle, the Bulldogs remain contenders for several top 50 national players and have fewer commitments at this stage. The odds are still favorable for Georgia to secure the top recruiting class in America for 2025.
