Breaking: Dodgers star is out for season with an unexpected injury

Dustin May, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ starter, is struggling with his health.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, May will be out for the rest of the season after having surgery to repair an esophageal rupture earlier this week.

May’s career has been repeatedly hampered by injury, so this is yet another setback. He did not throw at all during the 2024 season as he recovered from surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. He was supposed to start a rehab assignment in the coming weeks, but those plans are clearly going to be put on hold.

It is unclear what caused this injury, however Passan reports that it occurred in a non-baseball situation.

May is one of the Dodgers’ promising young pitchers who has shown star potential in the majors, but injuries have limited him to only 46 appearances over the last five years. He has never made more than 12 starts in a single major league season, but his 3.10 ERA in those games is quite impressive.

At this point, May’s injury history is vast, but they have all been baseball-related.

In addition to the flexor tendon surgery last year, he had Tommy John surgery earlier in his career and missed part of two seasons as a result.

He has one of the best arm skills in baseball and can consistently reach 100 mph with his fastball when healthy. The Dodgers had great hopes for him to become a staple in their rotation, but they’ve never had an opportunity to see what he’s capable of.

The Dodgers’ pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries this season. Shohei Ohtani will not throw this summer due to his own offseason surgery, and Clayton Kershaw, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, and Tyler Glasnow are all now out.
