‘Commitment’! NC State lands another top SEC transfer

The utility player rounds out the 2025 Pack’s squad.

Another SEC transfer, this time from Ole Miss’ Trenton Lyons, means that NC State will have even more depth on its 2025 roster. With three years left of eligibility, the 6’3, 185-pound utility player will be a sophomore in the upcoming year.

In 2024, Lyons made 21 appearances for the Rebels, including 7 starts. He averaged 9.3 BB%, 37.2 K%, 1-1 SB, and.256/.326/.282. He was a catcher most of the time, but he also struck out two of the opponents’ 14 base runners (14.3%). He won’t be sticking behind the scenes with the Wolfpack, in my opinion.

Lyons is mainly playing shortstop for the Holly Springs Salamanders this summer, though he also gets some at-bats at catcher and third base. He can play almost anywhere on the diamond thanks to his athleticism and defensive prowess. Lyons is batting for the Salamanders, where he plays fellow 2024 Wolfpackers Jake Bechtel, Rob Nedry (who is presently in the gateway), and Hollis Fanning.293/.391/.414, BB% 7.0, K% 13.0, SB 17–18.

Ole Miss transfer Trenton Lyons commits to NC State baseball - Backing The Pack

From last fall’s D1 Baseball report on Ole Miss:

Trenton Lyons appears to be a potential Ole Miss Swiss Army knife in 2024 and beyond because he is probably good at anything that can be done on a baseball field. He is a strong runner who can complete a sixty-yard dash in 6.6 seconds. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he is a powerful presence on the field. He played shortstop in high school and is a competent defender in the backfield, but the Ole Miss coaching staff believes he may even play corner outfield. He has a chance to be exceptional if he can demonstrate that he can hit SEC pitches, but his upside is already high.

The switch-hitting Lyons, a graduate of Memphis’ Christian Brothers High School, was ranked as the #205th player in the class of 2023.
