The New York Yankees’ problems appeared to reach a new low Thursday, when they failed to make an effort on a routine play.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Cincinnati Reds DH Jeimer Candelario hit a 1-1 pitch from Yankees reliever Caleb Ferguson up the middle into center field. What should have been a single became a two-base play when outfielder Trent Grissom approached the ball with one hand and fumbled it, allowing Candelario to go to second on the error.
The play elicited a chorus of boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd, some rare candid criticism from the YES Network booth, and supporters who want something done about it.
“They caught Grisham sleeping,” broadcaster Michael Kay explained. “And Grisham also bobbles the ball and Candelario noticed that.”
“Yeah, kind of lackadaisical there ― just bobbled it and didn’t pick it up quick,” analyst Paul O’Neill responded.
It doesn’t help Grisham’s cause because he’s also not doing his job at the plate. Despite going 1 for 2 with a double and a walk, he is still hitting.165 with a.652 OPS, five home runs, and 14 RBIs in 102 plate appearances.
Fans on X reacted quickly and furiously to the play, which was Grisham’s first error of the season:
Grisham will have a chance to redeem himself Friday, when the Yankees begin a series against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have lost 14 out of 19 games.
