Breaking News: LSU land ‘massive’ commitment for another talented star

LSU has received its own crootin’ pyrotechnics today as four-star defensive tackle Zion Williams revealed his commitment to the Tigers.

Williams, a Lufkin native, was chased by Bo Davis while he was Texas’ defensive line coach. When Davis was hired by LSU, their relationship persisted, and Williams plans to follow Davis to Baton Rouge.

“I feel like coach Bo had my best intentions and wants to get me to a position where I can support a family when I have one,” Williams shared with On3. “It meant a lot to me when he says that he thinks that I have 3-year potential, but I’ll get a degree before I leave.”

Williams is a massive young man, standing 6’5″ and weighing 330 pounds. He’s a composite four-star recruit, and ESPN rates him highly. ESPN rates Williams as a top-200 recruit, while On3 ranks him as the No. 366 player and 31st best defensive tackle.

LSU had no trouble recruiting offensive players, but getting defensive players has taken longer since Brian Kelly replaced nearly the entire defensive staff. However, defensive commitments are now starting to come in. Jesse Harrold, a Tampa-area edge rusher, committed around two weeks ago, Williams committed today, and LSU could add another defensive line commit tomorrow when Damien Shanklin, a four-star edge from Indianapolis, makes his decision.

Shanklin is deciding between LSU, Alabama, and Ohio State, and most predict the No. 47 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle to choose the Tigers.

LSU’s class is ranked fourth nationally by On3, after only Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia. Keep in mind, however, that LSU has far and away the fewest commits of the four. Ohio State has 22; Alabama has 20, Georgia has 17, and LSU barely has 13. Prioritize quality over quantity.
