Shamarius Peterkin, an in-state wide receiver, has announced his commitment date.
Winston Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor wide receiver Shamarius Peterkin, one of NC State’s top targets regardless of position, is nearing the end of his recruitment.
On Saturday, the four-star prospect, who has decided between the Wolfpack, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina, announced that he will commit to college on August 16.
In June, the 6-foot-2, 172-pound Peterkin had an official visit to all three colleges. His third and final visit to NC State left a positive impact.
“The visit went well,” Peterkin explained earlier this week. “It was a terrific experience — being around the coaches and getting to know them better. I also like being around the players. My host was KC (Kevin Concepcion), and it was great to talk to him.
“I am seriously considering this school. They’ve been following me since my sophomore year and are always in contact. They’ve sought to strengthen that friendship even further. Coach Joker (Phillips) constantly talks to me; I can chat to him whenever I want.
“My favorite part was talking to KC and getting his perspective on why he chose NC State. Also, I talked to him about the school. And then spending time with coach Joker, getting to know him more in person.”
State’s bond with Phillips, which began in ninth school, is arguably the most important reason he is a contender for Peterkin. Since Peterkin’s first day on campus, the two have developed a strong relationship.
“Outside of all the meetings, we had one-on-one conversations laughing and joking,” Peterkin explained this week. “We discussed life and how my summer was going. We also discussed high school football and how the summer training are going.
“My favorite part was talking to KC and getting his perspective on why he chose NC State. Also, I talked to him about the school. And then spending time with coach Joker, getting to know him more in person.”

“Coach Joker always keeps things honest with me. There is no sugarcoating or anything like that. As I already stated, I am free to speak with him about anything.
As a junior, Peterkin caught 42 receptions for 824 yards (19.6 yards per reception), including 12 touchdowns. Special teams: He returned seven kickoffs for 210 yards and five punts for 122 yards and a touchdown.
He is a Top247 prospect, the 22nd-ranked receiver in his class, and the sixth-best player in North Carolina, according to 247Sports.
