WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert does not believe Indiana Fever standout Caitlin Clark is being targeted by other players in the league.
On Wednesday, Engel came on Today with Hoda and Jenna to discuss Clark and the WNBA’s recent success. Clark’s games with the Fever have set viewing records on six separate networks. In fact, her last two WNBA games, versus Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, were the most viewed in almost 20 years.
Unfortunately for the league, the limelight has brought with it a series of divisive myths about Clark’s role in the league.
Clark’s many hard fouls have led some to believe she is being targeted because other players are jealous of her.
Engelbert says new fans simply need time to adjust to the toughness of the league.
“The fans we’ve had for a long time know how we have the best, biggest, most physical, best players in the world,” Engelbert informed the crowd. “What people don’t realize is that there are over 200 NCAA Division I women’s college programs. There are 12 WNBA teams, thus the skill is concentrated among the greatest, the biggest, the most physically fit, and, in general, the best players in the globe. So, I believe that every rookie will have to make an adjustment. I believe our rookie class this year, including Caitlin, is doing quite well. “She was the rookie of the month in May.
