The Dallas Stars have signed forward Oskar Back to a one-year contract worth $775,000 in the National Hockey League.
The 24-year-old recently completed his NHL entry-level contract with the Stars, with a budget charge of $851,000. According to PuckPedia, his qualifying offer was set at $813,750.
Back has spent the previous three years with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League, where he scored seven goals and 36 points in 59 games this season. It was his greatest season ever, following seasons of 25 and 27 points the previous two years. Back scored five points in each of the previous two postseason runs with Texas.
Back was drafted 75th overall by the Stars in 2018 and spent three seasons with Farjestad in the SHL, scoring a career-high 14 points in 52 games in 2020-21. Back also competed for Sweden in a number of international competitions, including the 2017 and 2018 U-18 World Championships and the 2019 and 2020 World Juniors.
Back is a depth forward that could be called up to the Stars as an injury replacement next year, but he is more likely to stay in the AHL full time. Back, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 205 pounds, is a great playmaker as well as defensive center.
According to CapFriendly, the Stars’ expected cap space for 2024-25 is $16.246 million. Joe Pavelski is not anticipated to play in 2024-25, while Matt Duchene, Craig Smith, Jani Hakanpaa, Derrick Pouliot, Scott Wedgewood, and Chris Tanev are slated to become free agents.
In the minors, Nicholas Caamano, Frederik Karlstrom, and Scott Reedy will be Group 6 UFAs, while Gavin Bayreuther and Alex Petrovic will be normal UFAs. On the RFA front, Sam Steel, Thomas Harley, Nils Lundkvist, and Matt Murray are all looking for new contracts in 2024-25.
The Stars lost in six games to the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final earlier this year, but they are anticipated to compete for the Stanley Cup in 2024-25.
