Breaking: Iowa State beat rivals to land commitment for another talented star

Iowa State football has received a commitment from Spirit Lake, Iowa, 2025 safety.

Stecker, an unranked safety prospect, has committed to the Cyclones on an official visit to Ames, Iowa, from June 14 to 16.

Stecker, a high school junior, primarily played wide receiver last autumn, catching 31 receptions for 636 total yards. Stecker’s athleticism stands out on film. The first play on his highlight tape is a contested ball that Stecker out-leaps a DB for before breaking a couple of tackles and sprinting down the sideline for a touchdown as he pulled away from the defense with his speed.

Often an outside target, Stecker demonstrates excellent ball-tracking skills. His Spirit Lake quarterback frequently threw high, lofting passes in Stecker’s direction, trusting the 6-foot-4 receiver to secure them for significant gains.

At the line of scrimmage, Stecker might need to work on his get-off. His footwork requires minor adjustments to help him gain separation on short routes against defensive backs in press coverage. However, his speed is typically sufficient to break away from defenders on downfield routes.

Earlier this month, Iowa State evaluated Stecker at a prospect camp. His strong athletic testing and impressive performance in positional and one-on-one drills earned him an opportunity with the team.

Stecker also participates in track and field and basketball. After earning Iowa All-State recognition as a wide receiver, he had a strong spring in track, winning the 2A 110-meter hurdles and shuttle hurdle. At the prestigious Drake Relays, Stecker finished second in the shuttle hurdle.

The Cyclones secured Stecker’s commitment over South Dakota, an FCS program.

Why it matters: Iowa State adds a second highly athletic safety prospect to their 2025 recruiting class. Following the first weekend of official visits, the Cyclones landed a commitment from Illinois-native Mason Ellens, who chose Iowa State before visiting rival Iowa. Stecker provides the Cyclones with a bigger-bodied safety prospect with solid athleticism to complement Ellens’ elite speed.

Stecker’s commitment also boosts Iowa State’s recruiting momentum in the state for 2025. The Cyclones have secured four of the top-10 ranked players in the state, including quarterback Alex Manske, receiver Xzavion Robinson, offensive tackle Will Tompkins, and EDGE Jack Limbaugh.

This marks a timely resurgence for the Cyclones in Iowa recruiting. In the 2024 recruiting class, Iowa State did not sign a top-10-ranked player from the state, with the highest-ranked prospect being three-star QB Connor Moberly. Rival Iowa secured seven of the top 10 prospects in 2024.

However, Iowa State has already landed 40 percent of the top-10 ranked players in the state this cycle and is currently trending with two crystal ball projections for Gilbert, Iowa, linebacker Will Hawthorne.
