The USC team has signed graduate transfer middle blocker Guy Genis (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance HS/UCLA) for the 2024-25 season, head coach Jeff Nygaard announced on Monday, June 24.
“We’re excited to welcome Guy Genis to our Trojan volleyball family,” according to Nygaard. “He brings some top-level experience and an international perspective that will benefit our team both on and off the court.”
Genis won back-to-back NCAA championships with UCLA (2023, ’24) over three seasons. He has been named to the MPSF All-Academic Team three times and UCLA’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice (2021, ’22). He played 76 matches and 245 sets for the Bruins.
Genis had 316 kills (1.29 kps) and 260 blocks (1.06 bps) across his career. He also recorded 75 digs, 21 service aces, and 19 assists, averaging 1.97 points per set.
As a senior in 2024, Genis was fifth in the MPSF in blocks (1.01 bps) and hit at least.300 in 15 matches. In 2023, he was named to the AVCA All-America and MPSF All-Conference teams. That season, he tied UCLA’s school record for most solo blocks in the rally scoring era (19) and finished fourth in the NCAA with a 1.21 blocks per set ratio.
He was named the MPSF Defensive Player of the Week and Off the Block’s national Middle Attacker of the Week that year. In 2022, Genis was selected the MPSF Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-MPSF selection. He concluded his first collegiate season as the nation’s 15th-ranked blocker (0.96 bps), hitting at least.500 in 17 games. Genis initially enrolled at UCLA in 2021 but was unable to come to the United States owing to pandemic regulations.
The Trojans went 13-15 during the regular season, ended sixth in the MPSF standings (3-9), and were 13th in the final AVCA Coaches Poll. In the postseason, USC progressed to the MPSF tournament semifinals, but lost to league runner-up UCLA.
The Trojans won six games over ranked opponents, and ninth-year head coach Jeff Nygaard achieved 100 career victories.
