Mack Brown and the UNC football team have officially received their first commitment from a Class of 2026 student-athlete, with in-state prospect Zaid Lott deciding to stay close to home.
After it was reported a few days ago that Lott was committing to North Carolina, the rising junior confirmed it on Monday afternoon via social media.
The 6-foot-4, 190-pound quarterback is not at the top of the recruiting rankings, as he presently does not have any stars in 247Sports’ player rankings. Although he is not a household name at this point, there are a few things to consider.

For starters, Lott’s varsity experience has been limited. His high school, Providence Day, had four-star quarterback Jadyn Davis, thus the future Tar Heel was relegated to backup responsibilities.
Lott put up some impressive stats despite his little action. During the 2023 season, Lott completed 21 of 26 passes for 331 yards. Lott completed 9 of 11 passes for 118 yards in his only start of the season.
With limited varsity participation, Lott has received little film exposure, as college programs have yet to properly appreciate his abilities on the football field. Simply put, the UNC football program was able to land another excellent quarterback on the recruiting path before he actually demonstrated his abilities.
The UNC football program was not alone in recruiting him; NC State, Florida State, and Boston College all issued offers. However, the Tar Heels emerged victorious in this recruiting war, as a possible high-profile prospect has decided to make Chapel Hill his future home.
