Breaking News: Texas Tech lands commitment for one of the country’s top talent

Texas Tech received a commitment from 2025 three-star offensive lineman Elias Gillen, who revealed his decision on social media Monday.
Texas Tech has landed a commitment from 2025 three-star offensive lineman Elias Gillen, who revealed his decision on social media Monday after an official visit over the weekend. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound three-star recruit from Rapid City, South Dakota, picked Texas Tech over other reported offers from Akron and Eastern Michigan.

According to the 247Sports Composite, an average of the main recruiting ranking agencies, Gillen is ranked as the No. 1,282 overall player in the country, the No. 94 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 2 overall prospect in South Dakota. According to 247Sports, Gillen is the No. 111 interior offensive lineman in the nation and the No. 3 overall recruit in South Dakota.

Gillen is the second offensive lineman to commit to Texas Tech after making an official visit to campus last weekend, following Garin Maley, a 6-5, 250-pound three-star recruit from Nebraska who revealed his commitment Sunday. The trio join Patrick McMath, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound three-star interior offensive lineman recruit from Katy (TX), who committed to Texas Tech after an official visit the previous week, to give the Red Raiders three offensive linemen on their 2025 commitment list. Texas Tech is anticipated to select four offensive linemen this cycle.

Texas Tech football: Joey McGuire is treading water but is that good enough?

“We’ll go somewhere between 18 and 20 high school guys,” said Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire when asked how many high school prospects he expected to take in the 2025 recruiting class. “When you look at our roster, when we initially arrived, it was really divided. There weren’t many middle-aged players, such as redshirt sophomores and redshirt juniors, so we’re gradually transitioning to having more of what I call the meat and potatoes of your roster with the recruiting classes that we’ve brought in. Guys in their third or fourth year of college, particularly on the 0- and defensive lines, should be playing because they’ve matured.

“So we’re getting closer but we’ll still be somewhere between 18 and 20 just because we still have a young roster with signing the class that’s here right now that played for us this year and the class that’s coming in–half your roster is still gonna be really young.”
