The Padres are 41-41 so far in 2024. With little over half of the season finished, the Padres still appear to be searching for its identity. San Diego’s chances of catching up to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West appear bleak. LA has a star-studded roster and leads the second-place Padres by 8.5 games.

San Diego’s best chance of making the playoffs is with an NL Wild Card position. If the season ended today, the Padres would be the NL’s third and final wild card team.

However, the season did not conclude today, and they are just a half-game ahead of the Washington Nationals in the Wild Card standings. Furthermore, the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets behind the Padres by only one game.

In other words, the NL Wild Card race will be highly competitive. Fernando Tatis Jr.’s health and availability on the field will be critical down the stretch. The Padres will not rush him back at this time, as they do not want to risk more damage. The team is now “evaluating” the issue. The Padres will post information shortly. Again, San Diego is clearly hoping that he will not be placed on the disabled list, but there is still too much ambiguity to make any predictions.
