Breaking News: ECU land commitment for another standout player

Josiah Dwyer joins the Pirates as a down defensive lineman for the 2025 class.

With several key seniors due to depart this season, East Carolina isn’t afraid to load up on skill and potential for the future on the defensive front. On Saturday, the Pirates welcomed Josiah Dwyer, a Marlboro County (Bennettsville, S.C.) High School product, to their roster.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pounder chose ECU over Coastal Carolina, which he officially visited last week. Dwyer also returned from an official visit to ECU during the last 72 hours. Dwyer also had FBS offers from Old Dominion and Troy.

He spent his junior season at Clinton High School in North Carolina before moving to Marlboro County, where former Clinton head coach Cory Johnson currently leads the program.

East Carolina now has 17 confirmed public commitments for the 2025 class, with four of them likely to play defensively: Dwyer, Amari Wilson, Zion Cooley, and Dominick Moody. ECU has also extended many committable offers to athletes who have recently visited the defensive line this cycle.

Defensive tackles coach Roy Tesh and defensive coordinator Blake Harrell are credited with recruiting Dwyer, who is anticipated to play inside defensive line despite having played some EDGE in high school.

Dwyer’s 6-4 physique still has plenty of room for further muscle and strength. On his junior tape at Clinton, he shown explosive pass-rush skills as well as the ability to penetrate and cause havoc in opponent backfields. Last season, Dwyer had 24 tackles, five sacks, and nine tackles for loss for Clinton in nine games.

Clinton went 15-1 last season, losing to Reidsville in the 2A state title 28-18, before having its head coach hired by Marlboro County.
